October Memories

A few weeks before I was born my grandmother purchased a ceramic, five-and-dime-store knickknack--an imitation Hummel of a cherub angel, meant to represent me.  Being her first grandchild, this was in honor of my October arrival.

She sits about five inches high and has tiny, silver wing-sprouts on the back of her shoulders. Her long-lashed, huge eyes glance upward and her cheeks blush a light pink, while wavy tufts of blond hair lay at the nape of her neck. Her hands are clasped in prayer as she kneels with a slight bend of her head. In Nanny’s heart, I was this angel.

On the day of my birth, October 28, she honored me by placing “Lori the Cherub” in the center of a table filled with her other sentimental memorabilia. From as far back as I can recall, she’d repeat this story with glee and remind me of how special my birth was to her. As my family grew, Nanny purchased two-inch, mini-cherubs -- lying on their side, relaxing on an elbow; their facial features almost identical to my larger version.  This collection grew to eight as more grandchildren arrived and encircled me!

I hardly ever remember this story, but I have had my cherub with me my whole life, through all kinds of moves and travels. Except for short intervals, she’s spent many years stored in bubble wrap in a box of memorabilia. But once I found my forever person and my forever home, I placed my precious cherub front and center on my altar in honor of Nanny—the person I’ve loved most in this world.

Now it’s October once again, my favorite season filled with cool air, crisp leaves, Halloween and my birthday, So many memories.  This year is a big one. I turn seventy!  As I contemplate that reality I see on the altar in front of me my beautiful cherub, still in mint condition! I go over and pick it, hold it close to my heart, and travel back in time. I am sitting in Nanny’s lap, warm and content, just listening as she tells me this story.
